Course description

How does the English Legal System work?

What is the difference between Criminal and Civil Law?

How are laws made?

Course content

Year 1

Dispute Solving

You will learn how the Criminal and Civil Courts operate in England and Wales and alternatives to going to court.

Law Making

You will examine the process by which both Parliament and the Courts develop the law.

Criminal Liability

You will examine non-fatal offences against the person and how those are sentenced in court.

Civil Liability

You will learn about the law of negligence and the remedies available.

 

Year 2

Homicide

You will learn about the crimes of murder,

manslaughter and explore criminal defences.

Property Offences

You will examine the crimes of theft, robbery, burglary, criminal damage etc.

Contract Law

You will explore offers, acceptance, breach and learn what they mean.

Entry requirements

You must have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least a grade 4 in English Language.

Assessment

50% of this course is assessed by exams and 50% through set assignments that you will submit at various points throughout the year.

Future opportunities

At the end of the first year BTEC students will be awarded a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Law. Successful BTEC Certificate students can go on to complete the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma.

Following this, a number of students go on to study Law in Higher Education. However, regardless of this, the qualification will help you to develop many transferable skills, for example reasoning, problem solving and analytical skills. You will also develop an understanding of the Law as a changing body of rules that affects you in all aspects of your life.
