English GCSE at Birkenhead Sixth Form College

Course description

Controlled assessments are completed in class in examination conditions. You will have time to prepare for them, and you will be advised by your teacher, but you will not be given any support during the time of the assessment. You will have more than one opportunity to achieve your target grade, if necessary. You will have the opportunity to take the written papers in January and have a second chance in June should it be required.

The GCSE is an interesting programme which should motivate you to develop your reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills through a range of stimulating resources and activities.

Course content

This course is mainly for students who just missed out on a grade 4/C in GCSE English the last time they took it. The course is likely to be broadly similar to the GCSE you took before, but it may be with a different examining board and you’ll finish the course in one year instead of two.

For the controlled assessments you will complete two pieces of creative writing (a narrative and a description); an essay on a literary text; an essay on spoken language; and three speaking and listening tasks.

There are two written exam papers, one assessing reading skills and the other writing skills.

Entry requirements

Usually a grade 3 in GCSE English. There is an alternative course for students with lower grades.
