Design and Technology at St Peter's Catholic School and Specialist Science College
This AS/A2 qualification is designed to encourage students to:
- develop a broad view of design and technology
- develop their capacity to design and make products
- appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.
At AS level students develop an understanding of a broad range of materials, with emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. This specification also considers the broader issues for the designer including the environmental sustainability of products and consumer safety. The course comproses of:
Unit 1: (PROD1) Materials, Components and Application (examination)
Unit 2: (PROD2) Learning Through Designing and Making (coursework portfolio).
At A2, the specification offers students the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS. Students will continue to develop a body of coursework alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial production and manufacture. The A2 course comprises of:
Unit 3: (PROD3) Design and Manufacture (examination)
Unit 4: (PROD4) Design and Making Practice (coursework portfolio).
A-level Product Design is a creative and challenging subject. A fundamental
requirement is a genuine interest and passion for the subject, but success at the end of the year depends mainly on commitment and dedication.
In addition to the normal St Peter’s Sixth Form entry requirements, you should have at least a grade C at GCSE in English, Maths and a Technology subject.
Coursework is assesed internally in the Spring Term. Examination assessemnts are taken in the Summer term.
Product Design gives students access to a variety of disciplines both in terms of further academic study at degree level or vocational based routes such as apprenticeships.
