Law AS/A2 Level at The Basildon Academies Sixth Form

Course description

The overall aim of this course is to provide an understanding
of a variety of key issues in the United Kingdom’s legal system.

You will learn:

  • about the legal system within the UK, with a particular focus on making law and the court system.
  • about the intricacies of criminal law, with a focus on the case law and how it is applied to different scenarios
  • about the law of tort and, specifically, negligence
  • about the concepts that surround and dictate legal case outcomes

Course content

AS outline
• At AS, candidates develop a knowledge and understanding of the legal
  system and an ability to evaluate its operation and performance. The
  specification introduces substantive law and requires simple application
  of aspects of criminal law and civil law (either tort or contract):
• Unit 1: Law Making and the Legal System
• Unit 2: The Concept of Liability.

A2 Outline
• At A2, the specification further develops knowledge of the legal system and
  of substantive law through criminal law and/or civil law. Evaluation of the
  concepts of law continues to be developed at this level of study.
• Unit 3: Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) or Contract Law
• Unit 4: Criminal Law (Offences against Property) or Tort, AND Concepts of Law.

General Sixth form inc.

English GCSE Grade B or above.


1 hour 30 minutes examination; 50% of final AS grade; 25% of A2
1 hour 30 minutes examination; 50% of final AS grade; 25% of A2

1 hour 30 minute examination; 25% of A2 grade
2 hour examination; 25% of A2 grade

Future opportunities

Law combines well with almost all other humanities AS and A Level
subjects such as History, Geography and English. It can lead to a
variety of university courses and careers such as business, economics,
philosophy, teaching and media studies. It is a good course for those
wishing to work with and help others.
