Course description

What is Physics?

Physics is the study of energy and matter that is scientific in nature.  Included in such study is the observation andcomprehension of the interaction of this energy and matter.  The energy involved here usually takes a lot of forms includinggravity, radiation, electricity, light, motion, etc.  On the other hand, the matters that are dealt with by Physics are thoseranging from particles to galaxies.

Why study Physics?

We study Physics because it is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us.  It isthe most basic and fundamental science.  

What makes a successful Physics student?

Many students initially find problem solving in Physics a daunting prospect, however with some hard work, some independentlearning, some learned habits, and some practice, even the most defeated student can become an effective problem solver.

Entry requirements

To study at Hellesdon High School Sixth Form you will need: SIX GCSEs A* - C Grades will enable you to study FOUR A/S Level courses.

We would advise that a Grade B at GCSE would be a good indicator of potential for A Level but we will discuss this with you. Equally we can discuss options for individuals who may fall short of the six higher grade entry requirements.

When applying for courses you should look to study subjects that:

  • a) You have a strong interest in (and enjoyment of)
  • b) You feel you are successful at
  • c) Your Yr11 teachers have highlighted you are good at.

It may also be useful to investigate university/employment websites if you have a particular interest in following a subject forward after Sixth Form.

Subject Specific

You will need at least a grade B GCSE in Maths, Physics or Science and English.

Future opportunities

Physics brings a broad perspective to any problem.  Because you learn how to consider any problem, they are not bound by context.  This inventive thinking makes Physicists desirable in any field.  A bachelor’s degree in Physics is a great foundation for careers in: Journalism, Law, Finance, Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Biology
