History AS at Hayes School

Course description

The course consists of both British and European History. The European aspects of the course cover the Russian Revolution, Stalinist Russia and the Cold War. The British elements cover the relations between Britain and Ireland 1867-1922 and the development of representation and democracy in Britain from 1830-1931. It is not necessary for students to have studied GCSE History to take it at A level, however, they will need to have achieved at least a B grade at GCSE English. Students who have studied GCSE History will need to have achieved a B grade to take A level History. Students who wish to continue onto A2 History, will need to have achieved at least a D grade in their AS course. Course Content Unit 1 – D3&4 Russia in Revolution, 1881-1924 and Stalinist Russia, 1923-1953 Unit 2 – D1 Britain and Ireland, 1867-1922 Unit 3 – E2 A World Divided: Superpower Relations, 1944-1990 Unit 4 – CW19 Representation and Democracy in Britain, 1830-1931 Assessment AS: Units 1 and 2 in June of Year 12.

4 GCSE B grades, including B in this subject

Future opportunities

With further training, you could go into a job related to history by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or within education such as a teacher. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in History, which could lead onto higher education in History or related subjects such as English, American Studies, Politics , Archaeology or more general courses. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.

      Continue on A21 towards Bromley. Turn left onto A232 towards Hayes and Croydon. Turn right into West Common Road the main school entrance is on West Common Road.


      Parking on site is limited and allocated to staff.
      Visitor bays are available at the entrance to the school

      BY RAIL

      We are located just up the hill from Hayes (Kent) Station (Connections from Lewisham or direct from Charing Cross). After exiting the station, walk right on Station Hill past the New Cross Inn, then walk up Ridge Way until you reach West Common Road. Turn right and walk along until you reach the school on your left.
