Art (Fine Art) A level at The Rochester Grammar School

Course description

An enriching and varied course with a strong focus on the skills required for Higher Education. The Fine Art will develop your ability to engage with the visual world and respond in a personal and creative way. You will develop a variety of skills and a working knowledge of materials, practices and technology in different disciples such as drawing, painting, textiles, sculpture and multi-media. You will develop your imagination and creative powers, your ability to experiment and analyse, a better understanding of art and design in past and present times and how as individuals we find our place within the world.

Course content

This is a 2 year course. The personal investigtion will consist of practical starting points from which students will develop up to three linked personal investigations.

Entry requirements

A GCSE grade B or above in Art and Design is required for entry onto this course.


In order to gain access to The RGS Sixth Form, students must obtain 5 GCSE grades at A*-B (5+) including English Language and Mathematics.


There are two components:

Component 1 (60%) - Internally set, assessed by the teacher and externally moderated.
Personal Investigation
Three tiered progression to develop own work.

Component 2 (40%) - Externally set, assessed by the teacher and externally moderated. First assessment 2017.
Fine Art timed 15 hour examination.
This component allows students opportunities to generate and develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources, record practical and written observations, experiment with media and processes and refine ideas towards producing resolved outcome(s) in response to an externally set theme.

Future opportunities

Studying Fine Art may lead to work in any creative field, from gallery/exhibition curator, architect, designer (graphic, jewellery, textile, fashion etc.) photographer and film work.

There are links with subjects such as Biology, English, History, Classical Civilisation, Design and Technology, Business Studies and Media Studies.

There are careers in fields such as dentistry, advertising, marketing, design, architecture, publishing and media. The study of Fine Art can also help you to develop, with determination and dedication, transferable skills that you can take into any career.
