Film Studies A-Level at Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College

Course description

You will appreciate and enjoy film and the cinema as well as being interested in film as an art form and as an industry. Your interest will be wider than mainstream movies, extending to different periods and national origins as well as different forms and styles. Film Studies prepares you well for a range of arts and humanities degree choices and offers a broad range of career opportunities. You will explore how meaning is made, and emotion conveyed, through the analysis of film language and the production of your own creative practical work; there will be an opportunity to write a screenplay or produce a short film/film sequence in video format as part of your practical coursework. You will study a range of distinctive characteristics in British film and you will compare two US films from different historical eras.

You will explore the film industries of different countries and cultures and look at the way that films are produced and marketed to global audiences. You will explore the issues of spectatorship through a study of documentary and world cinema films. Lessons involve a variety of teaching methods and learning activities, including pair and group work, discussion and independent research and film making.

Entry requirements

Grade C or better in GCSE Maths and either: grade A* or A in GCSE English, plus at least 3 other C grades or better at GCSE or: grade B in GCSE English, with an average GCSE score of 5.2 or better from at least 5 GCSEs or: grade C in GCSE English, with an average GCSE score of 5.5 or better from at least 5 GCSEs.

To study Film Studies at A level you will need to have the general college entry requirements.

    • 1. Leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow signs for the A590 and Barrow (33 miles).
      2. After 25 miles pass through Ulverston and then the villages of Swarthmoor and Lindal.
      3. At the third roundabout after this take the first exit, signposted Furness General Hospital and Furness Abbey.
      4. At the next roundabout take the second exit.
      5. Pass Abbey House Hotel on the left and take the first turning on the left into Rating Lane.
      6. The College is 400 yards down Rating Lane on the left hand side.
