Chemistry A Level at Kingswood Secondary Academy

Course description

Do you enjoy practical laboratory work? Are you someone
who can cope fairly easily with mathematics and would like to
use number work in problem solving? Are you intrigued by the
science that you have studied so far, and prepared to work
hard to find out more? If you want any science-based career,
then chemistry keeps your options open.

Course content

All aspects of chemistry, organic, physical, biochemistry and
environmental are covered. Many newsworthy, interesting
topics relating to chemistry are included in the syllabus (such
as the chemistry behind MRI scans, fuel cells, bio-fuels,
pharmaceuticals and the ozone layer).
Units covered at AS
– Atoms, bonds and groups.
– Chains, energy, resources.
– Practical chemistry 1.
Units covered at A2
– Rings, polymers, analysis.
– Equilibria, energetics and elements.
– Practical chemistry 2.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including C grade and above in English and
mathematics. Grade A desired in chemistry GCSE, core or additional
science, but good B grades will be considered on an individual basis.

Assessment

– AS Chemistry: Examinations in June.
Practical assessment throughout the year.
– A2 Chemistry: Examinations in June.
Practical assessment throughout the year.

Future opportunities

A wide range of university courses and employment
in industry.
