Wood Occupations - Level 2 Apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College
Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes Apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an Apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within the College. Wood Occupation Apprentices work towards a work-based NVQ qualification in addition to the nationally recognised Construction Diploma. Areas to be covered: Knowledge Based Qualification (Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery) or (Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry). You will study theory and practical sessions. General core units: Knowledge of Information, Quantities and Communicating with Others. Building Methods and Construction Technology. Know How to Produce Setting Out Details for Routine Joinery Products. Mark Out from Setting out Details for Routine Joinery Products. Carryout First and Second Fixing Operations. Erect Structural Carcassing. Know How to Carryout Safe Working Practices in Construction. Competence Based Qualification (Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations) General core units: Conforming to General Safety in the Workplace Conforming to Effective Working Practices Moving and Handling Resources Example of Optional Units:- Installing First / Second Fixing Components Manufacturing Routine Bench Joinery Products Setting Out and Fabricating Timber Framework Installing Frames, Linings and Internal Mouldings Erecting Timber Walls, Floors and Structures Installing Supplementary Frame Fixings and Features English and Maths up to Level 1 Maths English Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) The Apprentice National Minimum Wage applies to all 16 to 18 year old Apprentices and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If the Apprentice is aged 19 and / or has completed the first year of their Apprenticeship, the employer must pay the National Minimum Wage appropriate for their age. No specific academic requirements but employment as a trainee in Wood Occupations is essential. Applicants will be required to complete an initial assessment to determine their current learning level. "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."
The NVQ is assessed through work-based evidence compiled as an electronic portfolio. The Diploma is assessed on practical assignments, unit end tests and an online exam.
At the end of the programme, Apprentices will have achieved the Construction Skills NVQ Level 2 in Wood Occupations and the Construction Skills Level 2 Diploma in Bench / Site Carpentry. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to complete English and Maths that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation, and problem solving. On completion of the Wood Occupations Apprenticeship at Level 2, Apprentices can go on to complete the Wood Occupations Advanced Apprenticeship.
