Applied Science (Single Award) at St Peter's Catholic School and Specialist Science College

Course description

Pupils complete two portfolio based units and one exam unit.
Unit 1: Investigating Science at work (Portfolio) 33.33% of AS
Unit 2: Energy Transfer Systems (Exam) 33.33% of AS
Unit 3: Finding out about Substances (Portfolio) 33.33% of AS

Course content

Unit 1: Investigating Science at Work (Portfolio).  In-depth study into how science is used in the workplace, including thorough research into one local organisation explaining the science within that organisation.

Unit 2: Energy Transfer Systems (Exam). Study into the structure and function of the circulatory and respiratory systems, methods of taking physiological measurements, imaging methods used in monitoring health and applications of energy transfer.

Unit 3: Finding out about Substances (Portfolio). Pupils research, carry out and write about five different practical investigations – reactions of inorganic ions, titration, chromatography, colorimetry and combustion of fuels.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSE grades at A* - C, across at least 4 different subjects, including English and Maths. 

Assessment

2 portfolio based assessments and 1 examination.

Future opportunities

The Applied Science course will give pupils access to many Higher Education courses that involve Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The course also prepares pupils for science related work, including health related areas, scientific research and laboratory workers.
