Financial Studies - Diploma at Dixons City Academy

Course description

The IFS courses are together equivalent to one A Level and combined with the other courses make up the umbrella UK Career Academy qualification.  Commitment to the UK Career Academy involves a paid summer internship

Course content

Year 12 Certificate in Financial Studies (Ce-FS)

Unit 1 -   Unit 1 – Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term (FCIS)

Unit 2 -   Unit 2 – Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term (FCML)

Year 13 Diploma in Financial Studies (Dip-FS)

The second year of the course revisits earlier content, examining aspects of the real world of financial services from the providers’ perspective.  The emphasis here is on being able to justify your advice to would-be consumers.  Course weightings for each component are provided in brackets.

Unit 3 -  Sustainability of an Individual’s Finances (SIF)

Unit 4 -  Sustainability of the Financial Services System (SFS)

Students are expected to attend workshops and visiting speaker presentations.  The Chartered Insurance Institute and Bradford University are among those likely to contribute.

Entry requirements

Students will usually require 5 GCSEs grade C or above including Mathematics and English.  Students should note that GCSE Business Studies is NOT necessarily an entry requirement.  This new A-level-equivalent course divides into two separate components: the Certificate in Financial Studies in Year 12 and the Diploma in Financial Studies in Year 13.

The two exams in each year of the course are sat in separate sessions – typically January and May.   There are two components to each exam – a multiple choice onscreen exam and a written paper.

Students must achieve a minimum score of 40% in each component to pass.  Marks are also awarded for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Future opportunities

The course prepares students for entry into higher education for further study of Business Studies or related subjects.  Equally, material studied would be of benefit for candidates intending to pursue careers in the financial services industry.
