Travel & Tourism:Level 3 Extended Diploma at Suffolk New College

Course description

You will have the opportunity to learn both in and out of the classroom. Students benefit from two weeks work experience where they complete a project related to the tourism industry. Students Personal, Social and Employability skills are further developed through a comprehensive range of guest speakers and enrichment which provides a valuable insight into the industry and how it operates. Trips are also available on the course, with students last year visiting Suffolk Yurt Holidays, Cambridge with chauffeured punting, Southwold, The Salthouse Harbour Hotel, The World Travel Market and a cruise ship visit on the Black Watch.

All students who have not achieved a grade C or grade 4, or above in GCSE English or Maths or both will need to study an English or/and Maths qualification alongside their chosen main qualification.

Course content

Students complete units which include: Investigating Travel and Tourism, Customer Service in the Travel and Tourism Industry, Tour Operations, and The Marketing of Travel and Tourism. A wide range of internal assessment methods are used such as; written assignments, presentations, interviews and assessments using interactive technologies. There will also be 4 externally assessed modules. You will have a personal tutor who will support you in setting personal and academic targets to work towards your career aims and goals. Work experience will be carried out in a tourism related area for two weeks with a range of local employers.

Entry requirements

At least 4 GCSEs at grade C or grade 4 or above, including English Language or level 2 qualification in relevant subject at merit level and level 2 Functional Skills in English.

Financial information

Tuition Costs 

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2017. For all students aged 19+ please visit our website www.suffolk.ac.uk. Details regarding fee remission and Advanced Learning Loans can also be found at the above website.

Additional Costs

£75 for trips per year. Students are also encouraged to purchase two textbooks to support their studies each costs between £20-£25 (accurate at time of print). A residential trip will be included in year 2 which will cost approximately £325.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this study programme you could choose to go into part or full time employment within either the public or private sector. Alternatively, if you wish to remain in education you could progress onto an Apprenticeship. Some students have completed the Extended Diploma and progressed on to Higher Education and relevant degree programs.
