Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Level 2 at Midlands Training & Development Ltd.

Course description

This Apprenticeship covers a wide range of job roles on two pathways: the adult social care pathway and the health care pathway. This could mean working in the NHS, the private sector, local authorities or in the voluntary sectors.

Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled, the elderly or people with learning disabilities. This type of care usually takes place in the home or in care homes, or out in the community, and can include anything from helping people get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential home or taking them shopping. As an apprentice in Social Care, you could be a personal care assistant helping someone in their everyday life.

On the Health Care pathway, you could work in hospitals, the community, hospices or private clinics as a healthcare support worker or a healthcare assistant. You could be supporting doctors or nurses or helping patients in hospital wards or their homes – serving food, making and changing beds and so on.


Course content

An Apprenticeship is a valuable and recognised qualification which will give you a head start in your career.

Apprenticeships are an integrated programme of learning leading to the gaining and use of skills, knowledge and understanding required by employers.

An Apprenticeship is made up of:

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification), which demonstrates the apprentices competence in the job role.

Functional Skills, which give the apprentice the generic skills they will need in business (e.g. maths and English).

The technical knowledge which underpins the apprentices job role.

This is a broad based qualification which can be integrated with your in-house training and other relevant qualifications. Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) which is not formally assessed, but ensures that an Apprentice knows the key rights and responsibilities they have whilst at work.

All elements of the framework must be achieved to complete the apprenticeship.

Everyday tasks could include:

Helping residents to get up, washed and dressed in the morning. Working as part of a team to cover the care of residents and the cleanliness and smooth running of the Home. Completing paperwork. Taking residents out to hospital and day trips. Being able to work on own initiative, assess situations and the correct action to take with the least amount of fuss. Making beds, cleaning toilets, bathrooms and bedrooms no matter how dirty they might be.

Intermediate appreticeships will take approximately 12 to 14 months.

Entry requirements

There are no set entry requirements for Level 2 Apprenticeships but you will require good communication and numeracy skills.

You need to be working in a Health & Social Care environment and be able to perform a range of tasks appropriate to a level 2 or level 3 standard

Assessment will be completed in a variety of ways, from observation, diagnostic assessment, witness statements, professional discussions, written questioning and production of work evidence.  This will then be compiled in a portfolio of evidence and logged against the standards required in the qualification.

Financial information

This is a Government funded award, there will be no charge to the Apprentice.

Future opportunities

Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship will stand you in good stead for progression onto Higher Education in subjects like nursing or midwifery and operating department practitioner roles in the care sector or management roles in care homes. The main difference between the Intermediate Level and Advanced Level Apprenticeships is the level of responsibility the person holds and the role in which they work.

You can use the Apprenticeship programme as a stepping stone to College, University or other learning opportunities - as well as to progress further in your career.

Today, more than ever, a career in Health and Social Care is seen as a serious profession with a steady career path.


Further information

A Criminal Record Bureau check is required for all people working in Care. If you are considering a career in Care - working with the elderly then you need to be able to cope with some distressing sights.  Always be patient no matter what the noise level.  Able to tolerate unpleasant smell and always be courteous no matter what!

The majority of training will take place in your workplace although there may be a requirement for you to attend our centre either on a day release or in a number of days in a block. The amount of time varies depending upon your apprentiships.
