About the course
This is a practical and work-related Business course. You will learn all about the exciting world of business and have the opportunity to apply your learning in a practical and realistic way.
You will develop your knowledge of and gain a broad business experience in
- The world of business and everything that influences what businesses do
- How businesses are organised and their aims and objectives
- How businesses manage and organise their finances and their staff
- How to set up and run a business
- Developing knowledge of the techniques retail outlets use to merchandise and sell their products
- Selling skills
- Creating financial documents including balance sheets
Throughout your course you will develop a wide range of skills, working practices and thought processes including IT skills, presentation skills, independent learning skills, team work and leadership skills.
You will use a range of learning methods including practical assignments, discussion, presentations and the use of computer-based virtual learning environments.
On your programme you will study for Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.
A range of practical activities and trips will take place to support your studies on the course.
You are expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits. You may be entitled to help with the cost of trips and visits and anything else you need to buy for your course from the College’s Learner Support Fund.
4 GCSEs at minimum 3 / D grades (or acceptable alternatives) including a minimum of Grade 3 in English Language and maths.
This Business BTEC level 2 qualification is continually assessed through coursework and two units are assessed by exam.
Coursework will be based around practical business exercises and you will be encouraged to utilise your own experiences of business you may have developed through part-time work or work placements.
Where can it lead?
The next step could be to one of our Business BTEC Level 3 courses or an appropriate alternative. The course also provides a good preparation for employment or an apprenticeship.
Future career opportunities could include working in areas such as administration, accounting, customer services, estate agency, marketing, sales and retailing.
Staff and facilities
You will learn from experienced, specialised and enthusiastic business teachers with a range of academic and business work backgrounds. You will have access to up-to-date IT facilities and course resources on the college intranet which can be accessed at home. Business Advisers at the college can also give support and advice to students who would like to develop their own business ideas.
