A Level Spanish at Great Sankey High School

Course description

A Level Spanish offers students who have successfully studied GCSE Spanish the chance to extend and develop their ability in the language and to broaden their experience and knowledge of Spain. The course builds on topic areas covered at GCSE and encourages students to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in Spanish using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language. Students will also be able to develop critical insights into the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of Spain, Latin America and the Spanish speaking world.

Course content

AS Level

AS-Family and relationships / Media / Healthy living and lifestyle /Popular Culture

A2 Level

A2-Environment / Science and technology / Contemporary social issues/ 2 cultural topics. Most recently, we have studied the following cultural topics:
- Como agua para chocolate – Laura Esquivel
- Pan’s Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) – Guillermo del Toro

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE to study this course and at least a grade B in Spanish at GCSE and a grade B in GCSE English Language. Students should have sat at least one of the listening / reading papers at higher tier.

Assessment

AS– SPAN1 Listening, reading and writing is worth 70% and SPAN2T Speaking Test 30% of the AS Grade

A2 -SPAN3 Listening, reading and writing is worth 70% and SPAN4T Speaking Test 30% of the A2 Grade

Future opportunities

The ability to speak a foreign language is becoming ever more important in the workplace and is a skill highly valued by employers. An A Level in a Modern Foreign Language is a well respected and highly thought of qualification for anyone wishing to go to university. Students with A Level Spanish may wish to continue their language studies in Higher Education and there are many avenues to pursue: traditional single honours degrees in Spanish or Hispanic Studies, dual honours degrees (with English, Maths or History for example), starting a new language at university level, or embarking on one of the many degrees combining Spanish with a range of other subjects such as Computing, Management, Law, Accountancy or Business Studies. With one of these qualifications, the whole of the European employment market will be open to you. If you do not wish to continue your studies, you will already have a valuable skill appropriate to a range of professions, including the travel and tourism industry, import and export, sales and marketing, teaching and many others.
