Biology (AS) at Preston Manor School

Course description

This is an interesting subject offering students the opportunity to learn about living organisms, how they work and interact with each other. There are four theory units and two practical skills units.

Course content

Specification structure as follows;

AS Content Unit 1 Cells, exchange and transport

Unit 2 Molecules, biodiversity and food and health

Unit3 Practical skills in biology1

Entry requirements

GCSE Additional Science/Biology Grades B, GCSE Maths Grade C+ and GCSE English Language Grade C+


Unit 1 (15%)

Unit 2 (25%)

Unit 3 (10%)

Practical skills involves three types of tasks- Qualitative task, Quantitative task and evaluative skills

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses that may overlap with Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Biology, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology such as a Doctor, Nurse, Science Technician or Marine Biologist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
