Course description

Level 1 BTEC Diploma course is designed as an introduction to the health & social care sector. It will help you develop the personal skills and qualities needed to work in the health and social care sector. This course offers an introduction to a wide range of client groups and services for children, young people, and older adults.
This course covers many sensitive and personal subjects and therefore students will be required to carry out some personal reflection on attitudes and behaviours. It is important to be emotionally balanced and resilient to cope with these situations and the demands of working with vulnerable people.

Course content

Mandatory and specialist units: Communication; Managing your health at work; Preparing and learning from work placement; Creative activities for children; Promoting healthy eating in care; Personal care in health and social care.

Entry requirements

  •  Four GCSEs grade A*-E, an interview, an interest in Health & Social Care and a clean DBS check
  •  Positive reference from school, including high level of attendance and punctuality
  •  You will need to source a minimum of 30 hours work experience


Coursework, practical activities, and work experience.

Financial information

If you are under 19 on 31/08/2016, tuition is free. If you are 19 or over please consult Client Services for advice and guidance on funding and eligibility.
Please be aware there will be a cost of £45.00 for a DBS check, and there may be additional costs for equipment and educational visits. This information will be available from the curriculum staff at interview.

Future opportunities

Health and Social Care Level 2 BTEC Diploma or Children and Young People’s Workforce CACHE Level 2 Certificate. In order to progress, you will need to achieve a high level of attendance and punctuality, and a positive reference from your tutor.

Equipment needed:
  •  Uniform - Polo shirt and optional fleece; you are expected to wear appropriate trousers/skirt and shoes
  •  Stationery – USB, pens, paper, ring binder, dividers, plastic wallets, etc
  •  Access to internet and IT is an advantage
