Hairdressing Level 1 at Sheffield College
You will learn about styling women’s and men’s hair. You will develop skills in shampooing and conditioning, hair plaiting and twisting, styling and dressing hair. You will also cover aspects of beauty therapy including manicures. Part of the course will be learning about reception duties, dealing with customers and developing working relationships. You will also have the opportunity to create some photographic work.
You will be asked to purchase a uniform which must be worn at all times when in the salon. You will also need to have some key pieces of equipment that will be discussed when you come to the information event. Those in financial hardship can apply for help from the college's Learner Support Fund.
Functional Skills lessons will also form an important part of your course. You will study maths and English to help you improve your skills in these areas.
You will be given passwords for our online learning materials to support your learning and all assessments will be logged electronically via e-portfolio systems.
This course is ideal for students who need to develop social skills and would like a career in hairdressing or beauty therapy. You need to have physical stamina as you are often on your feet all day. You need some artistic flair and a good attitude.
Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty.
4 GCSEs at Grade 2 above including English Language
The course is assessed entirely by coursework so you need to have good time management skills and be able to work to targets and deadlines. Practical assessments will be carried out in the salon following training and practice. Graded assignments form the
majority of your assessments.
At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.
If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.
Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

You could progress onto a level 2 programme to specialise in one of the following areas: Hairdressing, Barbering, Nail Services, Beauty Therapy or Media Make-Up.
