English Language GCSE at Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College

Course description

You will wish to gain a grade C or above in this subject as you know that you will need this qualification in order to progress in further or higher education or in employment. Most students on this course will be taking the opportunity to improve on a previous grade.

You will study and write essays on the way language is used in a novel and on TV. You will develop your writing skills, from stories and description to letters and reports. You will develop your reading and analytic skills, comparing the ways language is used in non-fiction texts such as leaflets and opinion articles. There will be the opportunity to build confidence in your spoken English as well as improve the accuracy of your spelling and punctuation.

Entry requirements

To study English at GCSE level you will ideally have achieved a grade D in GCSE English, but you may be accepted on to this course if you have the potential to gain a grade C or above and have not had the opportunity to sit the exam previously

    • 1. Leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow signs for the A590 and Barrow (33 miles).
      2. After 25 miles pass through Ulverston and then the villages of Swarthmoor and Lindal.
      3. At the third roundabout after this take the first exit, signposted Furness General Hospital and Furness Abbey.
      4. At the next roundabout take the second exit.
      5. Pass Abbey House Hotel on the left and take the first turning on the left into Rating Lane.
      6. The College is 400 yards down Rating Lane on the left hand side.
