Business and Enterprise Level 3 at Sheffield College

Course description

This course is specifically designed to give you a sound knowledge and understanding in the key areas of business. The course will give you a taste of the main professional careers within business, helping you to decide what career pathway you wish to take upon completion of the course.

Over the two years on the course, you have the opportunity to develop key skills, knowledge and experience that will help you succeed at university, in meaningful employment or on an apprenticeship.



Course content

Over the two year programme, you will complete 12 units from a range of business areas that will give you a solid knowledge in all the key functions of business. You will study the following units:

  • Exploring Business
  • Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Personal and Business Finance
  • Managing an Event
  • International Business
  • Principles of Mangement
  • Business Decision Making
  • Team Building in Buisness
  • Creative Promotion
  • Pitching for new business
  • Work experience in business
  • Employment law

A range of learning methods are used including practical assignments, discussions, presentations and the use of computer-based virtual learning environments. Through this you will develop a wide range of skills including presentation skills, independent learning skills, IT skills, team working and leadership skills. You will also work on several live projects enabling you to apply what you learn in the classroom to real businesses.

Course enrichment activities include:  Visits to local and national organisations, Live projects for real businesses and an opportunity to go to a business conference abroad (Business Live at EuroDisney)

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at 4 - 9 / A*-C or acceptable alternatives including a minimum grade 4 in English Language and Maths..


BTEC courses are assessed mostly by course work including practical assignments, discussions and presentations. Coursework will be based around practical business exercises and you will be encouraged to utilise your own experiences of business you may have developed through part-time work or work placements. There may also be some exams.


Financial information


At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.

Free meals

If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.

Travel passes

Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Future opportunities

Where can it lead?

This course is the first major step on the path to a professional career in your chosen field. Many students go to university to study a range of business related courses such as Management, Marketing, Accounting, International Business, Event Management etc.

Successful completion of the course will also give you the opportunity to progress onto studying with one of the professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) or Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), which you can complete alongside working in your chosen field.

You would also have access to progress on to the Foundation Degree in Leadership & Management at Sheffield College, in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. There are also a range of Higher Apprenticeships (beginning at level 4, going up to level 6) that you could progress on to.

Further information

You will learn from experienced, specialised and enthusiastic business teachers with a range of academic and business work backgrounds. You will have access to up-to-date IT facilities and course resources on the college intranet which can be accessed at home. Business Advisers at the college can also give support and advice to students who would like to develop their own business ideas. All this experience and knowledge is brought together to make business studies exciting and relevant to today's business world.
