Bricklaying Diploma Level 2 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This course provides an ideal progression route from the Level 1 Diploma in Brickwork for you.  Classes take place within The Construction Training Centre, a dedicated facility for Construction Crafts. The course combines both theoretical and practical aspects and provides students with an intermediate level qualification for those looking to increase their skills and knowledge of Brickwork and seek employment in this area.

Course content

The Diploma is awarded by Construction Skills. You will be expected to show competence, which involves the application of knowledge and skills in a significant range of varied work activities, performed in a variety of contexts.

This course includes the following units of study:

  • Carrying out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Interpreting working drawings to set out
  • Masonry structures
  • Thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
  • Build solid walling, isolated and attached piers
  • Build cavity walling forming masonry structures

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (D or above) including English or successful completion of a Level 1 course with Functional Skills Maths and English). If you have not already achieved a Level 2 or GCSE grade C or above in English or Maths, you will be expected to work towards a qualification as part of your vocational course. This will increase your chances of employment or progression onto higher education. You will be assessed and put onto a suitable course which will enable you to achieve a qualification.Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be assessed on an individual basis by the Curriculum Manager and Curriculum Director.


Your progress will be continually assessed and you will be given detailed feedback to ensure that you are able to develop your skills effectively. Assessment includes practical activities, job related multiple choice Examinations at the end of each unit .

Financial information

You will need to purchase appropriate footwear to wear during practical sessions. You will also be expected to be equipped with: Scale Ruler/basic RulerProtractor RubberPens & Pencils Lined Paper & FileBasic Calculator (not mobile phone)Line & PinsCorner Blocks/set Squares

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma, you may progress to a Level 3 Diploma or, subject to gaining appropriate employment, onto an Apprenticeship.

Will I complete work placements?

The College is committed to ensuring that all students benefit from the opportunity to undertake work placement whilst at College and we will support you to obtain a placement in a relevant vocational setting. It is our intention to try to place Students with local employers. The placements would usually last 1 - 2 week, and compliment your College programme. Warrington Collegiate have developed strong links with National and local employers, and some work placements have led to employment / Apprenticeship opportunities.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

Students will be given an opportunity to participate in a variety of trips and visits. Educational visits are a useful part of any programme. We look favourably on a variety of visits, all of which enhance the learning process.

Are there any links with industry?

The college is continually developing and reinforcing links with industry to promote work placement opportunities. A variety of guest speakers from industry are invited to speak to students during the course of the year. Industry links are through the work placement programme, and the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board).

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
