Software Development Technical Baccalaureate Level 3 at Bradford College

Course description

This new and exciting course will equip you with the skills to create imaginative software applications including apps for Android and IOS devices. If you are ambitious, talented and want to pursue a technical career in the Software Development field, the Technical Baccalaureate (Tech Bacc) in Software Development is aimed at you. It will give you the opportunity to be stretched, through high quality and rigorous qualifications, and to demonstrate your personal best.

On successful completion of the Tech Bacc, you will achieve:

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development)
  • GCE AS Mathematics
  • Level 3 Extended Project.

Course content

The Tech Bacc is a mark of achievement for young people who successfully study three key elements: a DfE approved specialist high-quality Level 3 vocational qualification, a Level 3 mathematics qualification and an extended project related to the vocational area of interest. In addition, it offers the opportunity to gain valuable industry relevant experience.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development)

This course will introduce you to the key concepts of programming and guide you through the whole software development process. The course is made up of the following six Mandatory Units and 12 Optional Units.

  • Communication and Employability Skills for IT
  • Computer Systems
  • Information Systems
  • Software Design and Development
  • Systems Analysis and Design
  • Event Driven Programming.

GCE AS Mathematics

You will study three Modules: Core 1, Core 2 and either Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1. You will become confident in Core Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

Extended project qualification

This will develop and test your skills in writing, communication, research, self-discipline and self-motivation. Such skills are in high demand by industry and academia. The extended project component also gives you the opportunity to undertake research projects with an industry-focus, relevant to your vocational programme. It will encourage you to explore further aspects of the occupational area and equip you with a breadth of knowledge and understanding to strengthen your employability.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an essential part of the Tech Bacc initiative. It will enable you to research an area of work that is related to the subjects that form part of your Tech Bacc.

The EPQ will:

  • Allow you to identify, design, plan and complete an individual project (or task within a group project), applying organisational skills and strategies to meet stated objectives

  • Obtain and select information from a range of sources, analyse data, apply relevant and demonstrable understanding of any appropriate linkages, connections and complexities of the topic

  • Select and use a range of skills, including new technologies where appropriate, to solve problems, to take decisions critically, creatively and flexibly, and to achieve planned outcomes

  • Evaluate outcomes including own learning and performance and select and use a range of communication skills and media to convey and present evidenced outcomes and conclusions.

The project is organised such that towards the end of your first year you will work with your Project Supervisor to identify the project title for the project you would like to carry out as well as gain the research skills required to enable you to complete the task.

During the second year of your course you will develop your project with the regular support of your Supervisor. Upon completion of your project you will be assessed and a grade awarded. The final task will be for you to deliver a presentation in an appropriate format so you can communicate the findings of your project.

The EPQ is equivalent to an AS Level and is awarded UCAS points as such. We view this qualification as an excellent introduction to many of the skills you will require as you move into Higher Education. And is a compulsory part of the Tech Bacc.
