Biology AS/A2 Level at The Bulwell Academy

Course description

 

This course is just like Science at GCSE, but a lot more detailed. Your logical thinking and practical skills will be greatly developed, increasing your organisation and prioritising skills simultaneously! It will lead on well to further education courses such as Biology, Midwifery, Sports Science or Medicine.

Course content

 

Unit 1 – Biological molecules (AS – Examination) The first section of this unit covers a wide range from molecules, including water, carbohydrates and triglycerides to the structure and function of enzymes in the body.

The second section of this unit looks closely at the structure of DNA and RNA. A particular focus will be around the semi-conservative replication of DNA and how it ensures genetic continuity between generations of organisms. Also studied is this unit is the synthesis of ATP and its use in the body.

Unit 2 – Cells (AS - Examination) This unit covers the methods of studying cells and includes structure and function of eukaryotic cells, prokaryotic cells and viruses. The second section of this unit investigates the bi-lipid layer of cell membranes and how substances travel into and out of cells. The final section of this unit focuses on cell recognition and the immune system and includes the study of HIV and AIDS

Unit 3 – Organisms exchange substances with their environment (AS - Examination)

This unit focuses on the gas exchange systems of organisms to include: fish (gills), plants (stomata), lungs in humans. This information is linked to the transport systems within organisms such as cardiorespiratory system in animals and the xylem and phloem tissues in plants.

Unit 4 – Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms (AS – Examination)

This unit looks at DNA and protein synthesis and links DNA, genes and chromosomes to explain genetic diversity in organisms. Students will study how variation in organisms occurs with regards to meiosis and mutations. Students will investigate diversity within species and within communities and link this to adaptations in organisms.

Unit 5- Energy transfers in and between organisms (A2 – Examination)

This unit is separated into 4 sections. In the first section students will study the light dependent and independent reactions of photosynthesis. The second section covers respiration in animals and includes glycolysis, the link reaction and Krebs cycle. The last two sections focus upon energy flow in ecosystems and nutrient cycles such as the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles.

Unit 6 – Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments (A2 – Examination)

This unit investigates homeostasis and how it is coordinated by both hormones and nerves. This includes the electrical control of heart rate, the nervous control of skeletal muscle contractions and the hormonal control of blood glucose concentration.

Unit 7 - Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems (A2 –Examination)

This unit focuses on the inheritance of characteristics to include monohybrid and dihybrid crosses involving dominant, recessive and codominant alleles. The latter section of this unit focuses on evolution and how it may lead to speciation.

Unit 8 – The control of gene expression (A2 – Examination)

This unit investigates how the alteration of the DNA sequencing can alter the structure of proteins. The human genome project will be studied and linked to the recombinant DNA technologies that are available, such as the ability to transfer the DNA from one organism to another.

 

 

Entry requirements

 

Entry on to this course will require you to achieve 5 GCSEs including English and Maths, minimum B grade in Science.

Assessment

2 Exams in AS Year and 3 Exams in A2 Year.

Progression to higher education – any science, especially biology, biomedical science and biochemistry; zoology; pharmacology; sports science; physical education; medicine and dentistry; midwifery and nursing.

Career ladder – laboratory technician; teaching/tutoring.
