English Language at Sherburn High School

Course description

The English Language A Level course is designed to enable you to develop and apply your understanding of the concepts and methods appropriate for the analysis and study of language.

You will have the opportunity for independent investigation work related to language in use from a range of contexts You will engage creatively both collaboratively and independently with varied programme of studies investigating English Language from the past to the present day. You will develop your own skills as producers and interpreters of language.

First Year Units - AS
Categorising texts - You will look at Language and Power; Language and Gender and Language and Technology.
Creating Texts - You will develop your own writing skills by writing in different genres for different audiences and purposes

Second Year Units - A2
Developing Language - You have an opportunity to focus in depth on two areas of language study. You will investigate Child Language Acquisition and Language Change.
Investigating Language - You will apply linguistic methods and concepts to two separate pieces of writing, a language investigation and a media text.

Entry requirements

You should have achieved a sound GCSE in English ideally at grade B or Higher.
