BTEC Health and Social Care at Hasmonean High School

Course description

This is a course which will appeal to those students interested in pursuing a career which involves caring for, and interacting with, others of all ages and backgrounds in society. This course can lead to employment in social work, child care and nursing sectors.

The course is comprised of six units of work over two years, which cover a variety of interesting and challenging topics. It is not possible to stop the course after one year as the structure of the BTEC requires two full years’ commitment. Activities covered include: communicating with ethnically and financially diverse people, performing role plays, learning about individuals’ needs and varieties in lifestyles, such as the effects of alcohol on society, how education and upbringing affect life choices and the influence of popular culture. There are two weeks of work experience incorporated in the subject which allows students to gain valuable insight into various aspects of health and social care and also participate in learning experiences more specific to the career path they may wish to take. Some more challenging aspects of the course content include the study of human anatomy and physiology, diet and human development. Three units are compulsory and the remaining three can be chosen from a selection so the course can be adapted to suit the student cohort.

Entry requirements

Grade C in English is desirable. (Essay writing and literary ability are necessary skills.)


An assessment brief/project is produced for each of the 6 units and is marked on a pass, merit or distinction basis. You must achieve a minimum of a pass in each unit.
A pass is equivalent to A Level grade E.
A merit is equivalent to A Level grade C.
A distinction is equivalent to A Level grade A
A distinction* is equivalent to A Level grade A*
