Health and Social Care at St Thomas More RC School

Course description

This practical, work related course involves the following core units: Communication and Rights, Supporting Health Safety and Well Being. Students then take one further specialist unit called Investigating Vocational Experience. Students who can cope with the demands of the course may move on to the extension units which include Understanding Body Systems; Diet and Health; Therapeutic Care. This advanced diploma is worth four GCSEs.

Future opportunities

The specialist unit 'Investigating Vocational Experience' includes work experience placements.You could take this short course with a related GCE or other qualification to prepare for further education in areas of care such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Care or degree programmes. You could also go on to study an NVQ vocational qualification in areas related to care, which could be work-based. With further training, you could go into a job related to care such as a Social Worker, Nurse or Health Visitor. The course provides a work related programme of study so you could go straight into a job as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for, especially in the care sectors.
