Biology A Level at Sacred Heart Catholic College

Course description

Biology at Sacred Heart is a popular choice. The department has very

good facilities and links well with the local universities. The A Level

Biology course is designed to encourage candidates to develop

essential knowledge and understanding of concepts of biology and to

understand scientific methods and awareness of advances in

technology through a variety of theoretical and practical models.

The AS and A2 courses are modular, each comprising of three units;

two theoretical and one unit of practical and investigative skills. hat

Will I Learn?

AS Modules (Year 12): Biology & disease, the variety of living

organisms, practical and Investigative skills in AS Biology

AS Modules (Year 13): Populations and environment, control in cells

and in organisms, practical and investigative skills in A2 Biology

Entry requirements

AQA (the examining body) assumes that candidates have achieved

grade C or better in GCSE Biology or grade CC or better in GCSE

Science/Additional Science. However, the department policy is to

require students to obtain grade B or better in GCSE Biology or grade

BB or better in GCSE Science/Additional Science. It is essential to

have a good working knowledge of Chemistry and Physics to

understand aspects of the course and a degree of Mathematical

knowledge is required.
