Music A level at The Ecclesbourne School

Course description

In Music A Level we aim to extend your knowledge, skills and understanding needed to communicate through music and take part in music making. We want you to extend your appreciation of the diverse and dynamic heritage of music, develop strengths and interests for life-long learning and, should you wish, provide you access to music related careers.

At AS you will study three units. In the first, you will be provided with an opportunity to perform as a soloist and /or in ensembles in any style as part of a 5-6 minute assessed performance. In Unit 2 you will complete a 3 minute composition to a chosen brief and write a CD sleeve note to describe your music. The final unit involves studying pieces of music from an anthology, a general musical listening test and a harmony exercise.

The A2 comprises a further three units. In Unit 4, you will be given the opportunity to extend your performance skills. The unit culminates in a balanced programme of music lasting between 12-15 minutes. Unit 5 provides you with a choice of completing a choice of compositions or technical exercises. Unit 6 is a general listening paper followed by questions on set works.
