Electrical Installation Level 2 at Sheffield College

Course description

This is a one year full time course.

About the course

This course can help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to work in the electrical installation industry.

You will learn about the underlying principles of electrical science, gaining skills and knowledge in specialist areas such as electrical maintenance, installing wiring systems and enclosures.  You will learn about principles of electricity, circuits, electro magnetism, the principles of basic mechanics and the operation of electrical equipment such as motors and transformers. Health and safety and effective working practices including working in excavations and confined spaces will form an important part of the course.

This leads to the basic qualification required to an electrician, but this course alone does not qualify students to work as an electrician. In order to work as an electrician, students need to gain practical work experience which is usually through a recognised apprenticeship programme.

Approximately 60% of the course is theory and contextual work and 40% practical. This is the more practical option than the Electrical Engineering BTEC level 2.

You will be required to study functional skills or GCSE English or maths if you do not already hold a minimum of GCSE grade 4.  (Many universities and employers ask for a minimum of GCSE grade 4 in both maths and English).

Personal Study Time

You are expected to work independently on project work away from the college.
