Subsidiary Diploma/Certificate in Forensic Science (level 3) at Palmer's College

Course description

This course will provide you with an understanding of scientific principles and methodologies behind forensic and crime scene investigation. You will learn the role science plays in the criminal justice system and you will develop the skills required to collect, analyse and record evidence. The course features a mixture of both practical work and theory, and is ideal for students who have a passion for both learning science and developing a range of skills.

Course content

The course includes the following units:
• Fundamentals of science
• Working in the science industry
• Scientific practical techniques
• Forensic evidence collection and analysis
• Forensic photography
• Genetics and genetic engineering

There are no exams; assessment will be based on a combination of a lab book, experiment reports, practical; skills, interviews and other recorded assessments.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English and Science, at grade C or above. If you have a Level 2 Extended Certificate or a Diploma in Applied Science, Distinction preferred.

Assessment

There are no exams; assessment will be based on a combination of a lab book, experiment reports, practical; skills, interviews and other recorded assessments.

Financial information

You will be expected to purchase a lab coat from the College for approximately £10*.

Future opportunities

Students have moved on to university to study Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Human and Medical Science, Pharmacy and Biochemistry and Mechanical Engineering. It can lead on to apprenticeships in laboratory-based industries and engineering.
