Environmental and Land Based Studies Foundation Diploma (Level 1) at Cowes Enterprise College

Course description

The Environmental and Land Based Studies Diploma is a practical course designed for young people who have a broad interest and enthusiasm for the Environmental and Land Based Studies industries. The Diploma is a new qualification for students aged 14 -19 that is designed to be studied alongside GCSEs. The Diploma offers the opportunity to learn in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way, combining class work with hands on experience. The Diploma at the Foundation level is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grade D to G. Including a Diploma within your option choices will take up 40% of your school timetable and learning will take place on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and Friday all day (option blocks C & E). The Diploma course will last for 2 years. How is the Diploma put together? The Diploma is made up of different components that go together to form the whole qualification. Each Diploma contains the same components listed here: * Principal learning – This component develops the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to your chosen Diploma subject. * Generic learning – This component includes personal learning and thinking skills, a project and a minimum of 10 days work experience. Also included are functional skills in English, mathematics and ICT which will be studied alongside your GCSEs in these subjects. * Additional/specialist learning – This component gives the opportunity to study a particular topic in more depth or to broaden your studies through a qualification that complements your chosen Diploma subject. The Additional/Specialist allows you to tailor your learning to your own interests and aspirations. A variety of subjects will be available to you such as: Horticulture, Equine Studies, Animal Care, Environmental Science, Photography, Web Design, Self Employment, Language Studies. The Additional/Specialist learning and Project work for the Environmental and Land Based Studies Diploma will take place in a variety of locations in conjunction with the partners for the delivery of the Environmental and Land Based Studies Diploma.

Entry requirements

The ability to demonstrate: • a strong commitment to the subject area • an interest in pursuing a career for which the Diploma is an appropriate progression qualification • proof of a previously compiled portfolio of work • evidence of work experience in the relevant subject area • a reference from the home school regarding suitability for applied learning

Future opportunities

From the Foundation Diploma you can progress to the Higher Diploma, an apprenticeship or employment. Universities and colleges were involved in creating Diplomas, so you will get the skills you need to succeed on a further or higher education course. The Diploma was developed with the help of employers to give you the skills, knowledge and experience you need to do well in the working world. As you get the chance to learn in different settings, including the workplace, you’ll develop skills that employers really value.
