Art & Design (Fine Art) A Level at St Wilfrids Catholic High School

Course description

We follow the AQA specification for Art & Design. This course aims to provide you with a broad foundation in Art and to develop skills from GCSE. Aiming to promote the individual and creative development of student’s work and establishing confidence in creating artwork using a variety of approaches, techniques and skills.

 

Course content

We follow the AQA specification for Art & Design.  This course aims to provide you with a broad foundation in Art and to develop skills from GCSE.  Aiming to promote the individual and creative development of student's work and establishing confidence in creating artwork using a variety of approaches, techniques and skills.

Entry requirements

5 good GCSE grade passes (grade 4/5 or above) including English Language and Maths.  It is strongly recommended that you have a minimum grade B equivalent (grade 4/5) or above in a creative subject.

Assessment

Students will initially be introduced to a variety of techniques and materials during workshop sessions; these will build up students’ confidence, knowledge and abilities before they begin their main body of coursework.

  • Component 1: Personal investigation

    • 60% of A Level

    • Internally Set, Internally Marked, Externally Moderated by AQA during a visit to the centre.

 

  • Component 2: Externally set assignment

    • 40% of A Level

    • Internally Set, Internally Marked, Externally Moderated by AQA during a visit to the centre.

 

 

Financial information

The £30 art equipment fee will ensure you are supplied with high quality sketchbooks, basic required media and materials that will also include a clear A3 portfolio.

Art students are also advised to purchase a black zip portfolio of at least A2 size.  These can be ordered on the course, together with an art pack to compliment your independant study.  You will have use of the department laptops, iMacs and specialised printers.

Future opportunities

We have an excellent track record of our students successfully gaining places at universities on specialist Art and other related courses including Graphic Design, Textiles and Photography.

Further information

 

You will be required to participate in Art Workshops after normal College hours in order to supplement your lesson time.
