Geography (A Level) at Minsthorpe Community College, A Specialist Science College
The course has 3 components which include Physical Geography, Human Geography and new for this A level a piece of fieldwork. Please may I add that fieldwork is a compulsory element to the course and we will work hard to get this as cheap as possible, in previous years this has included an 2 night overnight stay which cost approximately £80.
The course looks at Physical Geography which involves:
Section A: Water and Carbon Cycles.
Section B: Coastal Systems
Section C: Ecosystems Under Stress.
Human Geography covers:
Section A: Global Systems and Global Governance.
Section B: Changing Places
Section C: Either Contemporary Urban Environments or Population.
There will also be an independent investigation which must include collecting data in the field.
Min 6 in Geography & 5 in English + 3 other Grade 9-4 or A*-C GCSEs
The course involves 2 exam which will be sat at the end of the course. Paper 1 is Physical Geography and is worth 40% of the course, Paper 2 is Human Geography and is worth 40 % of the course. The final component is the Geography Fieldwork Investigation which is 20% of the course.
There are many routes into a wide range of careers with Geography these range from teaching to town planning.
Independent study is essential to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. Fieldwork is compulsory to the course.
