Science at Trinity, Lewisham
Course consists of one main component called Core Science which all students follow and then a choice from two optional components Applied Science or Additional Science. Core Science teaches you the science you need to be a confident citizen of today’s scientific world. You will analyse the kind of science you see in the news, discuss its impact and learn about its relevance to you. You will learn some of the background scientific understanding needed to make sense of science in the news, and you will learn how to evaluate scientific data and information. For example, you will learn about genetics and examine issues such as genetic engineering and stem cell research. Additional Science features science for scientists. It prepares students for progression to study AS and A-levels in the sciences. By giving more emphasis and space to more fundamental ideas in the sciences, it provides a stimulating, preparation for more advanced study. Applied Science is a work-related course. You will learn your science from the perspective of people using science in their everyday work. You will study areas such as life care, forensic science and food production. You will learn about Health and Safety and will find, through visits, how science is used in the workplace.
You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Science and specialise further in Biology or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to science and biology such as an Science Teacher, Marine Biologist or Doctor. You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
