Biology A Level at Kemnal Technology College

Course description

You will learn both practical and theory skills, investigating the science of life and how it works from the micro scale involving DNA and genes to the macro scale of the survival of a species.

Course content

Year 12

There are four units studied at year 12 including biological molecules, cells, exchange between organisms and their environment and genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms. During the first year you will learn the detailed structure of the building blocks of life and how the are made and interact. You will study the different types of cells and their structure and investigate cell recognition and the immune system. Whilst studying cells you will learn about the methods for researching cells and the cell cycle. You will also learn about haemoglobin and blood vessels and their functions along with the heart and how it works. By the end of the year you will also be able to describe DNA and protein synthesis.

Year 13

The four units studied at year 13 include energy transfer in and between organisms, investigating how organisms react to changes in their environment, the nervous system and genetics. The year 13 order of study allows you to develop your knowledge and skills in gene synthesis in which you will learn about how the building blocks of life replicate themselves. On a larger scale you will study population genetics and the effects of different forms of selection on evolution. You will also study up-to the minute topics such as genome projects and cloning. Practical work Throughout the course you will enrich your learning by conducting experiments. These experiments are assessed both internally and externally and will ensure that you develop the skills you will need to pursue a career in science or study science in further education.

Entry requirements

GCSE APS of 46 or above 5A*- C including English Language and Maths.
