Drama & Theatre Studies AS/A2 at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)
If you are looking to pursue a career in the performing or visual arts it is essential that you have an advanced background in drama and theatre studies. It will also help to build confidence as well as equip you with all the key skills required for effective and intelligent presentation. The course provides you with opportunities to use a wide and differing range of practical techniques; ranging from mime to naturalistic theatre, absurdism to physical theatre. You may also have the chance to explore some of the technical aspects of theatre, such as lighting, costume and set design
You will learn to deconstruct plays – focusing upon how, in a practical sense, the playwright has developed language, character and plot. You will develop your performance skills in a challenging and focused environment – understanding how characters and performances illicit a response in an audience. You will understand the context of theatre – from both an historic and contemporary perspective. You will be encouraged to become a creative practitioner and stretch your dramatic imagination
B Grade (+) at GCSE Drama or a Distinction at BTEC. (Applications will be considered from students that haven’t done the subject before provided they can demonstrate prior interest).

Many of our previous students have continued to study the subject further at degree level and subsequently gone on to have successful careers in theatre and television. A recent article published by the Dean of Oxford University recommended drama (amongst other subjects) as an ideal subject for creating depth to an A Level portfolio. It teaches invaluable critical skills, confidence and team working skills, which are all transferable.
• Emphasis on Drama and Theatre Studies as a practical, intellectual and artistic subject. • Academic and practical study of the leading theatrical practitioners. • Exploration of key influential styles and genres of drama. • Many theatre visits to develop a good critical and analytical way of appreciating theatre. • Outside workshops to add greater depth and understanding to specific topics.
