Sport (Performance and Excellence) BTEC Level 3 Diploma SUFC Football Development Centre - A United Future - pathway at Sheffield College
This is a two year full time course.
This course will provide learners with a unique opportunity to undertake a high quality study programme whilst actively participating in an elite football development programme. This partnership programme unites a team of experienced education professionals at The Sheffield College with elite academy coaches from Sheffield United FC Academy.
This vocational course will develop your knowledge and skills to enable you to work within the football industry or broader sport and active leisure sector. All learners will be supported to improve their performance levels with opportunities to potentially gain a professional playing contract.
You will learn about areas such as:
Diploma Year 1 topics may include
- Anatomy and physiology in sport
- Fitness testing, training and programming
- Practical sport
- Safe and effective sport coaching
- Sports Injuries
- Leadership in sport
Diploma Year 2 topics may include
- Sports coaching
- Sports nutrition
- Sports psychology
- Work experience in sport
- Technical and tactical skills in sport
Additional short courses may be available to enhance your employability with the opportunity to achieve qualifications such as NGB F.A. Level 1 coaching qualification.
On your programme you will be required to study for Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.
You will be required to work independently outside of taught class time to complete course work assignments.
3 GCSEs at A*-C grades plus a minimum grade 4 in English Language.
BTEC Level 3 Sport courses are assessed mostly by course work and practical assessments however there will also be some exams.
At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.
If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.
Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Where can it lead?
Your next step could be into a professional playing contract or into employment in the sport, health and fitness industries or to higher education. Successful students may progress to one of our Sport Foundation Degrees or other university/higher education courses such as physical education, teaching, leisure and recreation management, events management, sports development and coaching.
You will be expected to buy specific clothing for your course at a cost of £190.00. You will need to bring appropriate kit for indoor and outdoor activities. You will be expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and any residential visits. You may be entitled to help with the cost of clothing, kit, trips and visits and anything else you need to buy for your course from the college’s Learner Support Fund.
