Music, Edexcel at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

A-Level Music is a subject which will allow you to further develop the listening, composing and performing skills that you will have developed through studying GCSE/BTEC Music.

In addition, you will develop further experience of analysing set works. To fulfil your potential at A-Level Music it is essential that you are regularly involved within the school’s extra-curricular activities and, hopefully, musical performance opportunities in the wider community as well.

 

Course content

AS Level:

Unit 1 : Performing Music up to Grade 6 standard.

Unit 2 : Composing Music.

Unit 3 : Developing Musical Understanding.

A-Level:

Unit 4 : Extended Performance up to Grade 7 standard.

Unit 5 : Composition or Technical Study.

Unit 6 : Further Musical Understanding.

Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post 16 Centre five passes or more GCSE passes at grade C or above and a minimum of a C grade in both English Language and Mathematics.  All students will also need a B Grade GCSE in any subject they are wanting to study at A Level.  If it is a new subject for example Sociology or Psychology students must have achieved a grade B in both Mathematics and English Language. 

Assessment

Performances will take place at the end of the course and will be assessed by your teacher and moderated by the exam board

Compositions will be submitted as coursework and marked by an external examiner

Developing Musical Understanding will be examined in a 2 hour paper sat under exam conditions

 

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Music, which could lead onto higher education to study Music related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes.
