CACHE Level 3 (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) Award and Technical Level 3 Certificate and Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) at The Canterbury Academy

Course description

This course comprises 50% work experience placements and 50% school based learning. It leads to a professionally recognised qualification.  This course is full time (no other subjects can be taken at the same time) and is the equivalent of three ‘A’ Levels, and carries between 240 and 360 UCAS points for progression to university (grade C and above).

Course content

An introduction to working with children, development from conception to age 16 years, supporting children, keeping children safe, the principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children, promoting a healthy environment for children, play and learning in children’s education, caring for children, and development of professional skills within children's education. 

 

There are a further three optional units relating to: developing children's (3 - 8 years) mathematical skills, developing children's (3 - 8 years) communication, language and literacy skills, and international approaches towards children's education.

Entry requirements

We would recommend a level 5 or equivalent at GCSE in English and mathematics, and a grade B in science.

Assessment

This subject is assessed largely by coursework. There is one external examination and an externally assessed research task. These are set throughout the two years at regular intervals.

 

CACHE recommends that you attend 100% of the teaching time allocated for each unit.  A record will be kept of your attendance, and if it is felt that you have attended an insufficient number of learning hours, you may be asked to take additional study before being allowed to submit the relevant assignment.

 

Future opportunities

Vocation 

Child care worker. The diploma prepares you to work unsupervised, or in a supervisory capacity.

 

Academic

Primary school teaching, secondary school teaching, children’s nursing, play therapist, adult nursing, midwifery, social worker, speech therapy, physiotherapy,  or another university based course.
