Economics A-Level at Bitterne Park School

Course description

This OCR A-Level course is exam based (2 units at AS and a Further 2 units at A2).

In unit 1 students gain a deeper understanding of the economic problem, how prices are set (demand and supply) and market failure issues.

In unit 2 students gain a deeper understanding of the economic variables (Economic growth, Unemployment, Inflation and Balance of Payments) and the different government policies used to correct the economic variables (Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy, Supply-side policies).

In AS Economics students will be expected to be able to write evaluative essays on the best ways to correct market failure and the best policies to use to meet government macroeconomic objectives. As well as essays students will be expected to illustrate economic topics using different types of demand and supply diagrams as well as calculating and using different types of economic data.

In unit 3 students investigate the work and leisure industry and understand how different firms operate within this industry and the market structures that exist.

Finally in unit 4 students will investigate into the global economy and the exam will be based upon a pre-release case study.

Entry requirements

Students must have 5 A*-C GCSE’s including Maths and English to do this course.
