Physics A Level at St Ignatius College

Course description

Year 12

Knowledge and understanding

In year 12 students will undertake either the AS physics course or the first year of the A-level course. Both of these are comprised of five modules – Measurements and their errors, Particles and Radiation, Waves, Mechanics and Energy and Electricity. Students will also complete six required practicals.

Skills

Adopt a disciplined, organised and logical approach to the study of theoretical and practical physics. Develop your ability to organize data, look for patterns, and apply information to complex situations. Practise your skills at thinking critically and creatively as well as breaking down problems and discover its underlying principles.

Year 13

Knowledge and understanding

In year 13 students will undertake the second year of the Alevel course. This is comprised of four modules – Further Mechanics and Thermal physics, Fields, Nuclear physics and Medical physics. Students will complete six required practicals.

Skills

Understand the underlying principles on which equations are built. Enhance your mental flexibility and problem-solving skills to deal with hypothetical situations. Practise your skills at thinking critically and creatively as well as breaking down problems to discover their underlying principles.

Assessment

Students will sit terminal exams at the end of year 12 and/or year 13.

To obtain the AS qualification students are required to pass two exams of one and a half hours duration at the end of year 12.

To obtain the A-level qualification students are required to pass three exams of two hours duration at the end of year 13.

Past paper questions will be embedded into lessons for self, peer and teacher assessment. The marking and feedback of these will show students how to obtain and exceed their target grade. At the end of each topic students will be assessed using a selection of past paper questions.
