‘A’ LEVEL ART & DESIGN at Selby College

Course description

This is a general course intended to develop your art and design skills, expressive capabilities and creative powers. This involves detailed and wide-ranging research into the work of other artists and designers, an experimental approach to the materials you use and the collection of preparatory images that will help spark off your ideas.

The course is ideal if you consider Art and Design to be crucial to supporting your future career choices.

Course content

The course has a clear emphasis on all types of drawing and painting but you will also explore a wide range of other media and processes such as photography, printmaking and textiles.

You will learn to experiment with many techniques in order to develop strong 'start points’ that can later be worked up using different materials and technologies. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of the specialist areas you can move into, especially in year two.

Possible subjects that may be covered include:

• Painting, Drawing and Illustration

• Screen Printing, Relief Printing and Printed Textiles

• Mixed-media/Collage

• Surface Design

• Typography and Letterforms

• Photography

You will need to be committed to an intensive course of study and prepared to devote a lot of time to the production of high-quality work. This course can be taken alongside an ‘A’ Level in Photography.

Entry requirements

Standard ‘A’ Level entry requirements apply. For this course you must also have a Grade 4 in Art, Textiles or Photography. If you have not gained one of these qualifications, you may still be accepted onto the course if you can produce a portfolio of work.

Assessment

40% of assessment marks through awarding organisation tasks/ 60% of assessment marks through college-set tasks.

Future opportunities

There is a huge range of possible career areas for artists and designers. ‘A’ Level programme students wishing to continue to study Art and Design subjects at university may need to undertake a further one-year Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design in order to gain the necessary experience that universities require. It is possible to progress directly onto a HND Art and Design at Selby College.
