Food Science and Nutrition (WJEC Level 3 Certificate) at The Sixth Form College Colchester
This is an exciting new course which will allow students to gain a wealth of knowledge about Food Science and Nutrition. Learners will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as practical skills about cooking and preparing food.
This course will be of particular interest to students interested in following further education courses or careers in the food industry. An understanding of food science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers, nutritionists, sport and fitness coaches, hotels and restaurants , food manufacturers and government agencies are ecamples of the many employment opportunities in the field of food science and nutrition.
This course is based on applied learning and experiences in contexts linked to food science and nutrition. It is designed to give learners knowledge, understanding and skills that can be used in employment or as a basis for furhter study.
Assessment is both internal and external, with internal assessement via a controlled assessment task set by the exam board and external assessment via a written examination.
GCSE English Language grade C (or 4) or above and Grade C or above in GCSE Biology (or GCSE Core and Additional Science) and, if taken, grade C or above in GCSE Food Technology or a related food based GCSE subject. Students who have good food skills, enthusiasm and demonstrate a good level of interest, but have not studied 'food' before may be considered. Good practical 'food' skills are essential.
Students will be expected to provide materials fro practical work, will need good practical skills, will need to be organised and self-motiviated and have the ability to work independently.
