Course description

Are you a caring person? Do you find yourself looking after others? Would you like to have a warm and rewarding career in health and social care?

A health and social care qualification can open the door to many different job roles including care worker, youth worker, health care assistant or in an organisation working with children and adults who have special needs. The qualification can also help you to progress on to university.

The Diploma gives you a fantastic opportunity to study Health and Social Care at a high level, which is equivalent to A levels, however also giving you practical experience along side these studies through your college arranged practical placements.

The Diploma will give you in-depth knowledge of the world of Health and Social Care, also looking at the body, the mind and the working of both.

The care industry is rapidly changing, with new government initiatives giving it a higher profile. These developments mean that it is more important than ever that well-qualified, experienced people enter the industry to meet this demand.

Course content

On this course you will study:

  • Effective Communication
  • Equality, Diversity and Rights
  • Health Safety and Security
  • Development through the Life stages
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Sociological Perspectives
  • Psychological Perspectives
  • A Further 10 Optional units studied , over the two years

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent, to include GCSE English. If you wish to progress to nursing or teaching you will need a grade A - C in GCSE English, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Science.

If you hold a Level 2 qualification in Health & Social Care you will need to have passed with a merit or distinction and hold a Level 2 Functional Skills English or equivalent.

Financial information

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2016. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Future opportunities

Once you have achieved an Advanced Extended Diploma, you can enter Employment or you may go on to University and train to become a Social Worker or Nurse
