This childcare course offers you the opportunity to develop and understand the basic knowledge needed to look after and care for children in professional settings, such as primary schools and private day nurseries. It provides the first steps to a career working with children as it leads directly into the level 2 childcare course.
An induction assignment at the start of the course quickly develops student's personal and team building skills. This assignment offers the students the chance to be part of the team planning and running a 'mums and toddlers' group for an afternoon.
Students study topics on human growth and development, food, care of children, health and safety and practical play activities.
Formal written examination - 1 hour in year 11
The following units are internally assessed through set assignments throughout the two year programme:
Unit 1 -Personal Development
Unit 2 - Human growth and development
Unit 3 - food and nutrition
Unit 4 - Health and safety
Unit 5 - Care of Children
Unit 6 - Play and practical activities
Unit 7 - Orientation to work programme
This course can provide a route to the following professional childcare qualifications:
Level 2 Certificate in Childcare and education
Where possible students will have the opportunity to complete placement in either a primary school or private day nursery.
