About the course
This is a practical and work-related Business course. You will learn all about the exciting world of business and have the opportunity to apply your learning in a practical and realistic way.
You will develop your knowledge of and gain a broad business experience in:
- The world of business and everything that influences what businesses do
- How businesses are organised and their aims and objectives
- How businesses manage and organise their finances and their staff
- How to set up and run a business
- Developing knowledge of the techniques retail outlets use to merchandise and sell their products
- Selling skills
- Creating financial documents including balance sheets
Throughout your course you will develop a wide range of skills, working practices and thought processes including IT skills, presentation skills, independent learning skills, team work and leadership skills.
You will use a range of learning methods including practical assignments, discussion, presentations and the use of computer-based virtual learning environments.
On your programme you will study for Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and English qualifications, if you do not already hold a minimum GCSE grade 4.
A range of practical activities and trips will take place to support your studies on the course.
You are expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits. You may be entitled to help with the cost of trips and visits and anything else you need to buy for your course from the College’s Learner Support Fund.
Will the course suit me?
To be successful on this course you will need a positive attitude, a lively and enquiring mind, a willingness to explore new ideas and a keen interest in accounting.
4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English Language & Maths
This qualification is continually assessed through coursework and two units are assessed by exam.
Coursework will be based around practical business exercises and you will be encouraged to utilise your own experiences of business you may have developed through part-time work or work placements.
Money At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies. Free meals If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items. Travel passes Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire. Learner Support Fund If you are enrolled with us, you may receive support towards the cost of: •Travel •Books and materials •Uniform and equipment •Essential course trips •NUS extra •DBS checks needed for your course (previously known as CRB) •UCAS registration fee and travel to interviews when applying for university
Where can it lead?
The next step could be to one of our Business BTEC Level 3 courses or an appropriate alternative. The course also provides a good preparation for employment or an apprenticeship opportunity in the business sector.
Future career opportunities could include working in areas such as administration, accounting, customer services, estate agency, marketing, sales and retailing.
