A Level Maths Further Double at Corfe Hills School

Course description

The course is intended to build on knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE. You are expected to be able to use the material covered at GCSE which will be used to build upon further mathematical areas. You will be regularly involved in problem solving and applying techniques to real life situations. Further mathematicians will experience all areas of maths and go on to study at a higher level involving topics studied in first year degree. If you intend to go on to study for a maths or maths related degree it is strongly recommended that you take further maths as some universities will ask for it. On successful completion of the course you will achieve two A levels.

What will I learn?

In Core Mathematics you will be extending your knowledge of graphs, trigonometry and algebraic techniques learning the fundamentals of calculus; differentiation and integration.
In Statistics you will study probability and data handling including representing data, correlation and regression and measures of spread. Statistics is useful for those studying Biology, Geography, Business Studies, Economics and Psychology.
In Mechanics you will study forces, kinematics and Newton’s laws of motion. Mechanics is recommended for students studying Physics.
In Decision you will study graphs and networks which model real life problems, linear programming which involves solving problems such as maximising profit, and the use of algorithms. Decision maths is useful for those going on to work with computers
