English Language and Literature (A Level) at Somervale School

Course description

These are just some of the questions that might be discussed by English Language and Literature students:

  •  How can I manipulate different features of language to write a story of my own?
  •  What are the differences between written and spoken English?
  •  What are the different ways in which people put over their views, prejudices and feelings?
  •  Are novels written in the language of real life?

Entry requirements

Students must achieve a C Grade or above in English and/or English Literature.

Future opportunities

English is one of the most popular degrees at University; nearly every University in the country offers a wide range of courses in the subject. Often students with A’ Level or degree English go into careers in print journalism, advertising, public relations and teaching. It is highly regarded by both employers and higher educational establishments because of the way it helps students to develop analytical skills and their powers of persuasion.

Who Might the Course Suit?

The course is aimed at anyone who enjoys creative writing and also enjoys reading nonfiction as well as literary texts. A proportion of time is spent talking and writing about texts so you will need to enjoy the in depth study of this. The course will develop your skills as a critical reader, your ability to listen attentively to the views of others, and establish your own critical viewpoints through speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will have the chance to flex your creative muscle through writing an extended piece of creative, original fiction. You will also learn to evaluate your own writing in detail.
