Brickwork - City & Guilds Construction Certificate in Brickwork Foundation Learning (Entry Level) at Hopwood Hall College

Course description

This course is for learners who want to learn the basics of brickwork and pursue a career in the area of Construction. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to become experts in their chosen field and allow progression onto an apprenticeship or higher level courses while working towards become a master craftsman. Learners are taught in new bespoke workshops and classrooms by industry experienced tutors.

Course content

The Entry Level qualification provides a basic introduction in to the area of brickwork by covering basic principles through a mixture of practical work and classroom work.

The practical work teaches the learner some of the hands-on skills needed for the trade, the classroom work teaches the learner about what the trade involves. There is an element of basic Maths included in the classwork for this course.

Topics on this course include:

  • Health and Safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Contribute to setting out and building masonry structures up to damp proof course
  • Block-laying activities
  • Bricklaying activities
  • Cavity walling activities

Students will also attend tutorial sessions on a weekly basis where topics to develop employability skills will be covered.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications. Functional Skills in English and Maths will be taught alongside the course.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of this course, learners can progress onto the Level 1 Diploma in Brickwork to gain further skills and knowledge in the area, or follow the brickwork apprenticeship route.

Possible careers include: Construction worker, bricklayer or building maintenance manager.

      By Road: 
      The Middleton Campus is two miles from junction 20 on the M62. Take the A627(M) towards Oldham and leave at first junction and follow signs to Middleton.
      By Rail: 
      The Castleton rail station is 2 miles from the Middleton campus, and takes around ten minutes to reach by bus.
      By Bus: 
      The No. 17 bus service runs frequent between Rochdale and Manchester approximately every ten minutes and stops at the entrance to the Middleton Campus.
